La Calcina is a historical place of Italy family owned and run. The location of the Calcina pension on the Zattere waterfront is a fortunate one. The incomparable panoramic view of the Giudecca Canal that the promenade offers, along with the light and sunshine that create a refuge and favoured walkway for Venetians even on the coldest of winter days, make it one of the most enchanting parts of Venice. When we started on the major restoration, our intention was to preserve the charm of the building and possibly even to add to it.
We also wanted, however, to create a hotel that was clean, welcoming, and efficient. We hope to have succeeded in our aims. What you will find, then, are the paintings, furniture and objects from the old house as well as those belonging to our family, who has lived in the Calcina for three generations. Classical music can be heard in the foyer and in the rooms. We also think it is important to promote and keep you informed about cultural events in the city; not only exhibitions sponsored by major museums, but also smaller, less publicized but often high quality shows put on by foreign Consulates and other minor institutions.
We are equally committed to providing good air conditioning and heating, to repairing anything that requires fixing as quickly as possible, to ensuring hygiene and cleanliness not only in the rooms, but also in the kitchen and public serving areas.
In the occurrence of high water, you will be provided with shoe protection and can go out or leave the city in spite of the conditions. When public transportation services are on strike (unfortunately, not a rare event in Italy), you will be informed as early as possible ahead of time. Along with our staff, we do our best to make sure the service is efficient but never intrusive. This is the most important way for us to make you feel at home, or at least, to not make you wish you were at home.
We have been included in all the most important hotel guides. We have been and continue to be mentioned and described in newspaper and magazine articles both in Italy and internationally, something that gives us great satisfaction. As far as quality for price is concerned, many have expressed the opinion that the Calcina is the best hotel in Venice. Nevertheless, only you can be the judge of whether our reputation is well deserved, and that is why we await your arrival. We would be delighted to know if your stay will be to your liking, and above all, we look forward to meet you..
Each of the 29 rooms are slightly different but they all have a high-performing Internet connection (DSL/Wireless), wooden parquet flooring, the furniture from the old inn, a bathroom, air-conditioning, a telephone, television, minibar and a safe.
Breakfast at the Calcina is a truly special occasion. It is served to the sound of classical music in the cosy little groundfloor rooms and on the enchanting "garden terrace" overlooking the Giudecca canal. If you prefer to have room service or to dine on the rooftop terrace, please make a special request. Hot beverages include a wide selection of hot chocolate drinks, teas, herbal teas, and naturally, delicious expresso and capuccino coffee. The buffet offers a variety of wholesome quality foods, including fresh fruit, croissants just out of the oven, homemade desserts, and jams from our own kitchen. If there is anything else you would prefer to have, we are at your disposition.
The restaurant's service takes place within the intimate and welcoming inner rooms and also outside in the wonderful terrace on the Giudecca Canal. The atmosphere is simple and familiar.
Our menu offers a large amount of Mediterranean cuisine and a large variety of seasonal vegetables. Special attention is paid to the quality and freshness of all the produce and only extra virgin olive oil is used. Desserts are freshly prepared , the sweets and the pasta are homemade...
We try to offer a simple cooking and therefore avoid disguising the taste with too sophistically prepared sauces.
We offer only Italian wines, a little from all the regions. A personal and carefully considered list that considers the small wine companies which pride themselves on quality.
